Exceptional Research Opportunities Program (EXROP)
2011 cohort of EXROP students attend the annual EXROP meeting at HHMI headquarters.
Initiated in 2003, the Exceptional Research Opportunities Program (EXROP) links the resources of HHMI's Science and Grants programs to provide selected undergraduate students with outstanding summer research experiences that encourage them to pursue careers in academic science.
EXROP students also attend meetings at HHMI headquarters where they present their research in a poster session, network with their peers and HHMI scientists, and hear from scientists from various backgrounds and stages in their careers.
EXROP students are eligible for continued support in their doctoral education via HHMI's Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study (www.hhmi.org/gilliam.)

How Does It Work?
Students are nominated for the program by HHMI professors and directors of HHMI-funded undergraduate programs at colleges and universities. EXROP then matches the students with HHMI scientists who have volunteered to provide mentored research experiences.
Selecting a Mentor, Research Project, and Location
Students nominated for the program may apply for the program at a password-protected EXROP site (www.hhmi.org/exrop) that provides an online application form and more information about the program. Students select potential mentors by viewing research projects, which can be searched by research area, academic institution, or geographical location.
The application is now closed for EXROP 2012.
